A Politician with Courage! Shocks State Political Pundits

What a gem of a Democrat we have in the state of North Carolina.
No wonder Governor Easley not only has won twice by landslide margins in Red North Carolina, but he has enjoyed consistent 67%-72% approval ratings from NC voters.

Regardless of your Presidential preference, political analyst from both political parties in North Carolina are giving Governor Mike Easley  double thumbs up for courage and conviction.

Op-eds in at least 4 newspapers in the Triangle area, Charlotte, and Greensboro will be paying homage to the democratic Governor tomorrow.

Governor Easley has literally shocked the political world of North Carolina today.

With 1 week to go & a very slim chance of Sen. Hillary Clinton winning the state, it came as a surprise to everybody including Clinton's very own state chair.

As repeated several times by local media outlets this evening, the easy way for Governor Easley was to do one of two things:

1) Endorse the strong favorite Barack Obama who is favored to win on May 6, ( as two of the current Dem Governor candidates have done)

As pointed out by the media, NO ONE KNOWS BETTER THAN GOV. EASLEY HOW TOUGH IT IS TO WIN a DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY in North Carolina against an AFRICAN-AMERICAN CANDIDATE.

Easley, despite his immensely popularity, lost to Black democrat Harvey Gantt in the Dem Senate Primary where  8 out of 10 African-Americans voted for Gantt.

( But come GE, Gantt was easily defeated by the Republicans)

OR

2) Easley could have easily remained silent & neutral. That would have been the easy way out.

As pointed out by Raleigh' ABC affiliate, politicians like Bill Richardson , John Edwards, & many others could learn from the courage of Easley. Most politicians love to join the bandwagon & jump with a perceived winner.

It took Bill Richardson two months to calculate who he felt would win the nomination & get him a possible role in the cabinet or even a VP selection.

While Edward's anonymous staff today, acknowledged that the reason Edwards has not endorsed, is he wants to make sure that he endorses the eventual nominee.

Easley, who was being heavily pushed by democrats to run for the Senate, will give his reasons tomorrow on why he endorsed Senator Clinton.

According to news reports, the Governor will use Clinton's ability to win back several states in the South including North Carolina as one. And the other being his belief that Clinton will be the strong candidate for November.

Kudos to you Governor Easley !

The hardest act to do for most politicians is refrain from joining the bandwagon & sticking to your beliefs.

So when someone endorses Clinton, they have courage and when they endorse Obama, they are opportunists or traitors.

When they endorse the candidate expected to lose their state they are brave when they endorse the candidate likely to win less so.

Re: A Politician with Courage! Shocks State Polit (2.00 / 1)

How does it show political courage when he is term limited and at the end of his second term?

When? Against who?  And why would it still be an issue then?

Re: Political courage when he is term limited... (none / 0)

BTW, the two Democrats vying to replace him have both endorsed Obama.

Any time he wants to.
Seriously,  Repub. Senator Burr's term is up in 2010.

Ha...I love it (none / 0)

when a politician endorses Senator Clinton despite popular sentiment to Obama, they are hailed as brave and courageous.

When a politician endorses Barack Obama despite popular sentiment to Clinton, he's denounced as a Judas.

  Not that I'm surprised!!

That's correct.

Not going to disagree with your premise. Easley is a good guy. But NC isn't nearly as Red as you imply it is. NC has a long history of Democratic Governors, including Easley's much admired predecessor Gov. Hunt. It is not uncommon for NC to have blue senators as well, so I'd really classify NC as purple.

When was the last time that North Carolina cast its votes for the Democratic Presidential candidate?  Apart from that...applause and kudos for Governor Easley.

The last time was Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Hypocrisy (none / 0)

So Easley is brave, Kennedy committed the greatest betrayal, and Richardson is a Judas.  Did I sum that up right?

Re: Hypocrisy (none / 0)

Nobody cared about Kennedy.  Witness how effective he was in putting California and Massachusetts in Obama's column.  Richardson is definitely a Judas, and he'll have to live with that when Hillary gets the nomination.

Re: Hypocrisy (none / 0)

I think the virtual certainty of a reign of terror should Hillary Clinton win the nomination is what's paralyzing the superdelegates.

I am looking forwardws to his (2.00 / 2)

reasons for endorsing Clinton.  I immediately thought he might be trying to stall the disaster that is Obama's candidacy. I also assume he see's what most of us see, that Obama is not ready and his judgment is very questionable.

For Obama it now becomes: Faith, hope and CHANGE! And the greatest of these is Change!

Re: A Politician with Courage! Shocks State Polit (none / 0)

Easley is a governor. Rendell is a governor. Strickland is a governor. Kaine is a governor. Sebelius is a governor. All have very high approval ratings. All have machines and know where the votes are and how to get them out. Kennedy and Kerry are senators: no machines. Governors (and big-city mayors) have clout and the ability to drive turnout.

Exception: Patrick and O'Malley are governors and couldn't push their candidates over the line. They are recently elected governors without the kind of clout Rendell, et. al. have. Their approval ratings are also lower as they are having early term difficulties.

Easley will make a difference. How much remains to be seen. Hillary needs to win about 70% of the white vote to win NC. Affluent whites in the research triangle make this a very tall order. But his help can make it close.

IMHO he is almost certain to challenge Burr in 2010. There is probably no other candidate in  NC who would have a better chance. FWIW I don't think this endorsement either hurts or improves his chances. By 2010 his endorsement will be forgotten (unless of course he is somebody's VP choice).

Afterthought: Napalitano is also a governor who couldn't get her candidate over the line. Maybe this whole post is nonsense. Thoughts?
